Sydney Film Festival 2017. 07 – 18 June.

Sydney Film Festival 2017

For 12 days (and nights) every year, Sydney becomes every film fanatic’s dream. The chance to be among the first in Australia to see what the cinema world has to offer. More than 200 of the most exciting (and sometimes strangest) work created for the year. Think premieres, inspiring talks and parties taking place all over Sydney.  Venues include:

  • The State Theatre
  • CBD cinemas
  • Newtown
  • Cremorne
  • Western Sydney

These are movies that you won’t see in a big cinema chain. They’re cutting edge, creative, and exciting.  Now, 400 sessions and 288 films probably seems a bit daunting. But the Sydney Film Festival have helpfully broken the schedule down into categories:

  • Selling fast at SFF – As the title suggests, these are the sizzlers of 2017. The films where you need to act fast to secure a ticket.
  • Europe! Voices of women in film –a collection of movies from Europe’s most promising female directors. It promises to be exciting and diverse.
  • International documentaries – Expect controversy tackled with respect and expertise from these. Including works from Steve James, Laura Poitras and Claude Lanzamann.
  • Opening night – we don’t’ need a mapWarwick Thornton explores our relationship with the Southern Cross. Presented by Lexus.
  • Special Presentations – with stars including Toni Collette, Aubrey Plaza, Rooney Mara and Jeremy Renner. All at the State Theatre. Presented by Princess Cruises.

The official competition

This year will mark a decade of the Sydney Film Prize. Each year the most ‘audacious, cutting-edge and courageous’ film is picked by the jury members. The winner will walk away with the title and $60,000 in cash.

 Buying tickets

Of course, you can buy single tickets. However, If you know you’re going to be going to several films, there’s the option of flexi-passes. Depending on whether you go for 10,20 or 30, these can save you quite a bit of money.
