As we edge ever nearer to waving goodbye to 2017, we thought it would be appropriate to share some of the best vantage points for the infamous Sydney fireworks. As usual there will be two displays, one at 9pm for families and then 12pm for those who can make it to the early hours.
Embarkation Park, Potts Point
With an Eastern view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge this is a great spot. Because of the trees the seating corridors are narrow but extremely pleasant as you’re amongst so much greenery. It’s an alcohol free zone but you’re more than welcome to bring a picnic as there are no food and drink sales on site.
Mrs Macquaries Point
This public viewing site offers prime views of both the displays. It’s situated within the Royal Botanical Gardens, with enough space to contain 16,000 people. With doors opening at 10am you can expect the area to reach maximum capacity early on. There are food and beverage services available but no BYO allowed. Just turn up with a rug and take full advantage of all that’s on offer.
Cockle Bay Wharf
One of the busiest places to be, with the capacity to hold 46,000, it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. If it’s not too late, a tip would be to book a table at one of the many restaurants along the harbour. The venue opens from 7am until 4am on January 1.
Observatory Hill Park
This popular picnic venue is only a 20-min walk from Circular Quay and Wynyard. As it’s situated up high it offers a truly spectacular view of the entire spectacle. Get here early as it usually fills up from 12pm onwards.
Blues Point Reserve
If you want to avoid the crowds of the CBD but still want a great view of the harbour, this spot is a favourite. It’s located on the other side of the bridge, with views of the western side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It’s a free spot so it’s better to get there early (expect queues if you head there later in the evening). This is an alcohol-free zone so is perfect for families or those who just want a quiet evening.
The Sydney Opera House
With front row seats to the NYE fireworks it’s no surprise that this is one of the most popular viewing points. So popular, it has been known to attract early campers to ensure they snap up the best locations. It will be packed out early as there is pre-fireworks entertainment on offer – think aerial displays and colourful pylon projections. This is not a BYO venue.
Pirrama Park
Renowned for architecture, grasslands, playgrounds and cafes this free venue offers it’s visitors the chance to hold their own BBQ. The 1.5 hectare venue in Pyrmont can house up to 15,000 people along the water’s edge.
Barangaroo Reserve
This NYE vantage point opened last year as a place to view the fireworks. It sits on the edge of the CBD and Hickson Road and will open from 6pm onwards. This is a ticketed event.
