We Sydney-siders are very fortunate when it comes to the weather. We’ve definitely lucked out on the sunshine front. But there are some times when the elements that come with a colder climate are suited and Christmas is one of them. Snow, Santa, sleighs, mulled wine, chestnuts roasting on an open fire – it all points to the chillier climate of our Northern Hemisphere counterparts. So, in true Australian fashion, we’ve created a little something special for ourselves – Christmas in July.
It’s a chance for us to embrace the cooler climate and enjoy things like mulled wine, open-air ice-skating, and snowball fights. We look at where to enjoy Christmas in July in Sydney (and a bit beyond) this year.
The Rocks Christmas in July Markets

Where: The Rocks
Prepare to be transported to France for French-themed Christmas Market in The Rocks. Complete with European Wooden Chalets, mulled wine, Christmas Carols, plus food and gift ideas to help you celebrate at home.
Blue Mountains Yulefest
When: June-August
Where: Blue Mountains
There’s no one event but the whole region encapsulates the Christmas vibe. You may even get some real snow! Lots of venues offer Christmas-style meals and hospitality. It’s just up to you to choose where and how you want to experience it. Expect log-fires, Christmas carols, turkey and pigs-in-blankets a plenty.
Ice Skating at Cathedral Square CBD
When: 29 June- 22 July
Where: St Mary’s Cathedral forecourt, Sydney CBD
The first two weeks of July see forecourt of St Mary’s Cathedral covered with an outdoor skating rink. It’s full European style with foodstall huts with delicious delights. You’ll also find the iconic ice slide to race your comrades!
Winterfest Luna Park

Where: Luna Park, Sydney
If you’re looking for school holiday entertainment, then look no further than Winterfest at Luna Park. There’s ice skating, unlimited ride passes, and a dazzling five-minute light spectacle – Phantasos.
