The El Alamein fountain in Fitzroy Gardens is an iconic part of Kings Cross, and through the 1960s and 1970s was an icon of Sydney itself. Opened in 1961, it commemorates the battle of El Alamein, Egypt, in World War II – the site of two battles which helped turn the course of World War II.
Designed by Robert Woodward, this State Heritage-listed site has been copied all over the world, heralded as an outstanding work of modernist design. Commemorating a battle rather than the loss of individuals armed force members, it’s also a rare type of war memorial.
This Anzac Day will be different but we can still pause, reflect, and pay personal tribute to the sacrifices made by ANZACs all over the world.
