Where to get into the Christmas spirit in Sydney 2020

If you’re welcoming the thought of some Christmas cheer and saying hello to 2021, then there’s nothing quite like looking at some Christmas lights or watching a festive performance to get you in the mood. So, whether you’re looking to start straight away or you’re going to wait a little longer, we’ve put together some great places to get you in the Christmas spirit in Sydney this year. 

Take yourself on a Christmas lights and decorations walk

Sydney Culture Walks App has created a self-guided tour of lights, decorations and shopping destinations. Simply download the app and start walking. 

Martin Place Christmas tree

Every year without fail Martin Place houses the tallest Christmas tree in NSW. Go take a look and marvel at the 110,000+ LED lights, a 3.4 metre colour-changing star, and 330 glossy baubles. Plus, there’s a 15-minute light show every night between 7 pm and midnight to enjoy.

Pop-up musical performances

Between 4 and 24 December there will be various pop-up musical performances staged in different locations around Sydney. Expect to see festive lighting displays, decorations and roving performers all with one thing in mind – to bring Christmas Cheer to all. Each pop-up will appear in a different location each day including:

  • Redfern Street, Redfern
  • Fitzroy Gardens, Kings Cross,
  • Taylor Square, Darlinghurst,
  • Crown Street, Surry Hills
  • Union Square, Pyrmont
  • King Street, Newtown
  • Erskineville Road, Erskineville
  • Green Square Amphitheatre, Green Square

QVB Swarovski Christmas tree

If you’re partial to a bit of bling then this Christmas tree is the one for you. The 24 metre Swarovski Christmas tree stands in the centre of the historic QVB, creating a sight to remember. 

Canopy of light

Stand under the illumination of thousands of sparkling lights as you get through your Christmas shopping lists at Pitt Street Mall. 

Light installations on George Street

Take yourself on a light-hunt down George Street as you look out for illuminated buildings like the Woolworths building and magical fairy light canopies at the Myer loading dock

Strand Arcade 

With beautiful light installations peppered around the Strand Arcade, all inspired by native flowers, there’ll be nothing but joy to be found. 

The Rocks

With secret laneways and pretty festive displays, The Rocks is a magical place to be around this time of year. Meander through boutique stores to find extra special gifts or just enjoy a delightful meal on your walk to find the Christmas lights. 

Darling Square

A more interactive take on Christmas lights, you’ll find three huge interactive Christmas bells in Darling Square. Each has an inbuilt swing so you can enjoy a bit of fairground-style fun. 

Christmas presents and baubles at the Harbourside Forecourt

Now, these are impressive. Head down to the Harbourside Forecourt and you’ll discover giant 6ft tall baubles and Christmas presents surrounding you. Each decorated with bright silver and pink lighting, it’s a great photo opportunity for everyone.
