VIVID 2021 – A sneak peek at what to see

After having to go into hiding in the summer of 2020, the brightest, boldest festival of lights is back in Sydney; and this year it means business.

Running from 6-28 August 2021, the festival promises to deliver an outdoor gallery of contemporary light installations and 3D art that’s guaranteed to brighten your year. And, with a cutting-edge line up of music acts and deep-dive discussions, it’s an event designed to spark creativity in all that visit.

Now, we still don’t know the full program of events but they have released a sneak peek of three installations that are a must-see. And we’ve added a few pictures to get you excited but as this is a special sneak peek at what’s to come, they’re not images of the actual light installations – we’ll just have to wait and see.

Ephemeral

The latest creation of Sydney-based design studio, Atelier Sisu, will have you walking on water. It’s an immersive, ‘art-chitecture’ piece that will see 200 bubble-like spheres creating a floating walkway over Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour.

Each bubble is lit up from within with iridescent colours that are ever-changing. It’s a world premiere of something that has never been seen before. And the magic will continue throughout the day, with reflecting dichroic film that reacts to the sunlight and causes a rainbow reflection on the water.

Point of View

At the corner of Playfair Place + George Street in The Rocks, you’ll find a ghostly projection into an artist’s work. Using the historic sandstone facade as a virtual canvas, artist Brad Robson + Esteem Projects will draw you in to the process of painting – playing with multiple viewpoints as they go.

As you watch, you’ll see each fluid stroke that’s involved in the creation of a masterpiece. Moving through the process of painting until the final piece appears, just as the artist ‘paints’ himself out of the picture.

Vorax

The iconic Customs House is going to be swathed in pop hues of the animator and illustrator, Ho Sheung Ning. It’s a 3D mapping animation that will tell the story of a mischievous thief, rising through the artwork to greatness.

Watch in awe as the talented artist takes you through the metamorphosis of the climbing thief in mind-bending environments, unitil the climax of an epic battle with a magical creature.

We don’t know about you, but we’re excited to see more of what VIVID 2021 has in store.
