8 NSW winter getaways that will give you the right kind of chills

As winter begins, it’s a good time to start thinking about taking a little break outside of Sydney. And luckily for us, NSW is a state full of beautiful places to explore. So, whether you’re looking to hit the slopes or find a country cabin with a wood fire, we’ve put together 8 suggestions for a NSW winter getaway. That will all give you the right kind of chills.

Perisher

How lucky we are to have ski fields in our state. And one of the most popular is Perisher. So, whether you like to ski or snowboard, the drop in temperature signals the time to head to the Gum Tree-lined slopes. And if you can catch one, the sunrises here are pretty spectacular.

Orange

Known for its premium cool-climate wine and artisan food scene, this is the perfect place to take a road trip to – especially in the cooler months. Wrap up warm, find yourself a place to stay with a hearty fire, and book some wine or beer tasting tours.

Southern Highlands

This stunning country region is just 90 minutes from Sydney, making it the perfect destination for a quick weekend getaway. With country estates, luxurious hotels or quaint country cottages, you’re bound to find somewhere that you’ll love to stay.

Gundagai

Four hours from Sydney and five hours from Melbourne, is a picturesque country town in The Riverina. Visit the famous Dog on the Tuckerbox Pioneer Monument, discover the rich colonial and indigenous history, admire the architecture, or catch a fish, ride a rodeo, then enjoy a wine from a boutique winery (or two). And, if you’re looking for a unique Australian country experience, take a look at the luxurious Kimo Estate with Eco Huts, two cottages or shearers’ quarters to choose from.

Lightning Ridge

Take a trip to this iconic outback town and bathe in the 40-50 degrees Celsius Lightning Ridge Bore Baths, visit the Black Opal mine, or find the underground sculptures. In fact, there’s lots to do in this town so you may have to add a few more days to your trip.

Mudgee

If you’re looking for strong country town feels along with beautiful, crisp winter days, then a four hour drive from Sydney will get you where you need to be. There are lots of bushwalks to explore, wineries to sample from, and delicious restaurants to dine in.

Blue Mountains

The world-famous Blue Mountains are just a 90 minute drive from Sydney, and an easy train ride away. And now that international travel has been put on hold, you won’t be fighting with the international tourists when you get there – bliss. It’s beautiful any time of the year but there is something truly magical about the winter mists that fall. And with plenty to do, from bushwalking to decadent dining, it’s the perfect little winter getaway not too far from Sydney.

Kangaroo Valley

There’s much to explore in this lush green valley, just two hours from Sydney. Kayak down the river, walk through the bush, drive over Australia’s last surviving suspension bridge, ride a horse, or just take a scenic drive. Whatever you decide to do will be unforgettable.
