Just because you’re short on square footage doesn’t mean you have to forgo a pool. In fact, we’re seeing a rise in small backyard pools in gardens big and small.
The Aussie dream of a huge swimming pool in your backyard is slowly being replaced by smaller pools that complement but don’t dominate the space. And residents of smaller inner-city blocks and courtyards are also finding more compact ways to fit one in.
What makes a small pool small?
If you are thinking about adding a pool to your garden or courtyard space, there are a few options to choose from – and they all fall into the small pool category:
- Small swimming pool
To be considered small, the average dimensions are 6m x 3m, however, this can vary due to your space i.e. it could be 2.8m x 7ms if you have a long but narrow backyard.
Most swimming pool construction companies offer mini versions of their full-sized pool designs which can be a prefabricated fibreglass shell or a built-in-your-backyard concrete pool. The latter is the more expensive option but it also means you can create a pool to fit your space perfectly.
The size does mean that this will be more of a relaxation exercise rather than vigorous. But it would still be a refreshing way to cool down on a hot summer’s day.
- Plunge Pool
These are perfect for when you really don’t have a lot of space. They are smaller in surface area but run deep, so you can immerse yourself completely in the cool, freshwater. You could even add some swim jets which create a current, so you can swim on the spot.
Due to the smaller size, plunge pools are cheaper to build, easier to maintain, and more cost-effective to run. They require less water, chemicals, and heating. So, if you’re looking for a more environmentally-friendly option, this would be it.
- Above-ground small pools
Rather than building one in the ground, you can place one above the ground. This means less construction work is needed and your pool arrives ready to go – once it’s been plumbed and wired in of course. It also means you may be able to take it with you when you move house.
There are a few different types of above-ground pools, ranging from vinyl-lined to shipping containers – it just depends on how much space and budget you have.
We see many buyers still hanging on to their wish of a pool when purchasing smaller properties. Whether it’s a pool already installed or space to add one, especially if they have kids. And while it’s difficult to put an exact price on the value it may add, a pool definitely adds to the resale appeal.
