It’s said that moving is one of the most stressful things we can go through. And, as Real Estate Agents, we see those who handle it well through to those that don’t. So we thought we’d help you out and offer some handy tips to help make it as easy as possible.
Like with most things in life, it’s what you make of it. So, if you don’t have a clear plan and decide to wing it, chances are you’ll end up forgetting things and getting stressed about them. However, if you plan and organise right from the beginning, you’re more likely to have a better experience.
Start with the small things
Thinking about the big picture is easy. You need to get from A to B on an agreed date, perfect. But it’s the small things that can cause the angst – especially if you remember them too late. So, it’s best to start with the small things because once you’ve ticked them off your list, everything else will just flow on. Redirect your mail and sort your utilities early, then you won’t be frantically trying to sort it all when you’re already in your new place.
Declutter first, pack last
The thing we all notice when we’re packing up a home is how much stuff we accumulate over the years. So, the best thing to do when you’re moving house is get rid of everything you definitely don’t need.
Just focus on one area at a time. Whether it’s a cupboard or an entire room, it will help to ensure you don’t get overwhelmed. And prepare to be strong. Don’t keep things that aren’t useful or in the words of Mary kondo “Don’t bring you joy”. If you don’t love it or need it, it’s time to let it go.
Take special care of the things you care about the most
Keep special items separate from everything else and label them clearly. That way, you can keep them close to you on move day and there’s less chance of a last-minute “I can’t find them” panic.
Donate and recycle where you can
If you’re in the midst of decluttering and your wardrobe is the next space to tackle, consider whether things can be donated. And if they can’t, whether they can be recycled instead. From holey socks to used underwear, there are some places which will accept them – you just need to find them.
Upparel will come and pick up your unwanted textiles for a small fee and you’ll get $25 to spend in their store in return. They make socks and sofas out of your old clothes, or they send them to people that need them if it’s too good to break down.
If you have old face masks, cosmetics bottles, toothpaste tubes, coffee pods, or even pens, TerraCycle can recycle them. You can arrange your own community pick up or find a store near you that has one organised.
